Amyloodinium can be difficult to locate on the gills when the infection is just starting. The dinospores are very small when they first attach and 100 X magnification is required. A 100 X photo of an early infection can be found here. A 400 X photo is here.
As the infection progresses, more and more dinospores are released into the water. The infection can be seen easily even at 40 X as shown here
