Phoslock binds with phosphate in the water. Phosphate is primary nutrient for algae, and Phoslock gives pond managers a much greater amount of control over their ponds than they have had in the past. Phoslock is useful for the following situations:
Low water exchange ponds tend to accumulate phosphate over time resulting in blooms that are very difficult to manage. Application of Phoslock removes excess phosphate allowing pond managers to better control algal blooms in low water exchange ponds.
Blue green algae can dominate blooms when phosphate levels increase. Application of Phoslock removes excess phosphate allowing other types of useful algae to replace the nuisance blue greens.
A diverse algal bloom is preferable to a dense single species bloom. Application of Phoslock removes excess phosphate which helps to thin out algae blooms and increase algal species diversity.
Some toxic algae are highly dangerous when the N:P ratio diverges from optimum levels. Application of Phoslock removes excess phosphate allowing pond managers to quickly return their pond to optimum N:P ratios and so minimise the toxicity of dangerous blooms.
Phoslock is safe to use. It is a specially modified bentonite clay which locks up phosphate permanently. Application is simple and no special equipment is required.
